What is consciousness?

I know its the question everyone has and no one has solved. What is consciousness ? How is that only we have and no other animals have ? did Homo-Erectus have one ? Was it passed on from one generation to another ?

Is our consciousness made up of rules and laws made up by the society?
if so then will there be consciousness alive for a group of people who haven't been in touch with any society for generation ?

If we fall asleep or in deep sleep ...and something happens to us physically ..will our consciousness be awake or will it sleep with us ?

Second Birth of Buddha ... Mulbekh, India

Situated 45 km from Kargil and 260 km from Leh in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir, Mulbekh Monastery is famous for its two gompas and the nine mtr tall statue of Maitreya Buddha.
